Born in Montreal, Ron Bazar has had a varied career as an entrepreneur, business consultant and writer and publisher of children’s books in the 1980s and 90s. He is a Harvard MBA and has over 40 years of experience as a natural foods and health product insider. Currently, he shares his insights as a self-published author of health books available on Amazon.
Ron has also enjoyed turning wood, a craft he’s pursued on and off since he was 12 years old. Following a 15 year break from this pastime, Ron felt inspired to take up the craft again after moving to Cortes Island in 1998. While gathering arbutus for a turning project, he was struck by the beauty of some of the rough-hewn off-cuts destined for the kindling box. They were so gorgeous to Ron’s eye that he felt inspired to create his first piece: a letter opener as a birthday gift for his mother. Arbutus Arts was born.
Chosen for the rarity of the wood grain and elegance of the design, form meets function in the culinary tools that Ron shapes. The pieces are polished to an exquisitely smooth finish to honour the beauty of the wood. This functional art demonstrates the spirit of arbutus, capturing the essence of its native British Columbia in pieces designed to bring this beauty into the home.
Ron salvages his wood from forest fall-downs, dead trees and branches. Finished with food safe natural walnut oil, his Arbutus Art is both beautiful and highly functional.
“The Arbutus tree’s wood has such a wide range of colours and textures, and, because of its hardness, it finishes to the smoothest of smooth. It is perfect for utensils and small wood items. Its rich tones and excellent finishing characteristics rival those of any tropical hardwood. There is no finer hardwood to be had anywhere in Canada or the United States.”
