ABOUT
Hiva Barikani is an Iranian artist based in Vancouver, B.C., on the traditional and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.
With a decade of experience as a jewelry artist, Hiva specializes in metalsmithing, alongside ceramics and sculpture. Her multidisciplinary practice has been enriched through extensive studies in fine arts and multiple advanced metalsmithing courses, enabling her to execute numerous jewelry collections and commissioned works. She has participated in several jewelry exhibitions and has also coordinated exhibitions herself.
Hiva's work draws inspiration from a childlike perspective and the simplicity inherent in naive art, qualities she associates with honesty and purity. Her playful use of whimsical elements reflects deeper themes of hope, spirituality, and liberation. Having grown up under an oppressive regime, these concepts carry personal significance, driving her to embrace childlike aesthetics as a means of expressing sincerity and authenticity.
Through her art, Hiva hopes to invite the viewers into a world that celebrates the essence of freedom and the human spirit.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Hiva's art serves as a commentary on themes of hope, spirituality, and freedom, blended with simplicity and humor. It subtly opposes the oppressive norms of the government she grew up under in Iran, as a form of silent resistance and expression.
