Each doll is made entirely by hand using needle and thread. All have interior copper armatures, making them easy to pose and sculpture in many different postures and positions. For me the fun begins with the costuming process, selecting and combining an opulent array of fabrics including velvets, satins, brocades, ornamental trims and buttons, and from all that fashioning original outfits. The eyes, noses, mouths, and whiskers are all hand-beaded, giving each doll a unique, sparkly expression. The toads are gifted with bejeweled heads. All this with just a needle and thread and a little imagination. Over the years the dolls have been collected by people from all over the world, usually finding a place on the best piece of furniture in the house. Toad and his associates are special, preferring to inhabit imaginative realms where they can be affectionately viewed by their companions.
I believe one’s artwork should aim to uplift, inspire, and possibly amuse those who come into contact with it. My inspiration has come from a love of animals and all the childhood figures we grew up with, such as The Wind in the Willows, Beatrix Potter, and The Nutcracker Ballet. The dolls transport people back to a gentler place inhabited during their childhood.
