Medium: Fibre Arts
Location: Powell River, BC

Born on Dahlia Drive in Los Angeles, Wendy moved to Calgary in the mid-‘60’s. She studied acting at the University of Alberta and the Playhouse Acting School in Vancouver. After working 26 years on stage and film, culminating in a Jessie Award for Best Actress in 2001, she moved from performing stories to story telling through textile arts.

Since graduating in 2006 from Capilano University’s Textile Arts Program and the pattern cutting portion of the Costuming for Film and Stage Program, she has honed her use and application of disperse dyes on synthetic fibres. Dahlia Drive’s mission is to use recycled materials to create beautiful, long lasting pieces of clothing engaging a process that does not create more waste nor take advantage of/harm the earth. Dahlia Drive is made entirely in British Columbia.

Most fashion pieces are created from pre-patterned 2 dimensional yardages cut and sewn into a finished sculptural form. I start with the sculpture. Curtain sheers, once diaphanous boundaries between our homes’ inner and outer worlds, are sewn into transparent garments, defining a new boundary between the body’s landscape and the external world. This relationship inspires me to layer, infuse and embellish a new story onto the map; not to eradicate the previous history, but to stand on its shoulders as part of its evolution. Ultimately, a woman becomes the foundational layer to the living canvas.
