Cathi Jefferson

Cathi Jefferson

Medium: Ceramics
Location: Duncan, BC

Born and raised in Vancouver, Cathi Jefferson’s career as a studio-trained potter began under mentor Herman Venema in Matsqui, BC in 1974. She completed fine arts courses at Kwantlen College and the Fraser Valley College while continuing to work in his studio for 16 years. Cathi has additionally been able to develop her skills alongside fellow ceramic artists in numerous national and international residencies, including four months at the Banff Centre.

Since 1993 she has been salt- and soda-firing altered wheel-thrown and hand-built functional and sculptural stoneware inspired by earth tones, images from nature (specifically the West Coast rain forest) and form fitting abstract designs. Each piece is affected by its placement in the kiln, producing unique variations in rich colour tones and textural surfaces, making each one truly unique.

Cathi’s work has been published in several books and shown in numerous exhibitions. In 2010 she was awarded the Carter Wosk BC Creative Achievement Award for Applied Art and Design.

Currently Cathi works as a studio artist and teaches at the University of Victoria.

“I have always known that I was meant to work with clay. [I believe] that it’s important to have handmade items in our lives to help us remain connected to the natural world and to each other. I strive to make the form of each piece interesting and strong, capable of functioning so well that it will be enjoyed and used often because it elevates the ordinary into something special.”
