Denise Jones graduated with a degree in Fine Art in Leicester, UK in 1991. Her initial foray into the art world grew from her fascination with the way man-made materials change with the passage of time. This led to an interest in recyclable metal objects and how their original purpose can be transformed by imagination. She began creating boxes, clocks, jewellery, hooks, chimes, frames and other metalwork using silver-plated cutlery.
It wasn’t until she moved to Canada in 2008 that she began experimenting with textiles, focussing on crochet, felting and needle-felting to create her unique line of hats, headbands, scarves and bags. She uses natural fibres produced with eco-friendly dyes wherever possible.
In 2013 she was awarded silver for Excellence in Craft at the Circle Craft Christmas Market in Vancouver.
All of her pieces can be gently hand-washed with a mild detergent and reshaped while damp.
“After 15 years of working in metal I wanted the challenge of working in a new medium. Making hats became a passion that meant I could maintain a sculptural element in my work and I could explore different textures and colour combinations as well. My love of Art Deco inspires my creations as well as nature and interesting shapes that I notice around me. I continually think of new designs and have always tried to be original with my work.”
