Angelika Werth

Medium: Fibre Arts
Location: Nelson, BC

Angelika Werth originally hails from Germany, where she completed her degree as a Master Dress Maker-Designer at the Meisterschule Handwerkskammer in Hannover in 1973. Prior to this, she apprenticed at the Anna Seiman school in dress-making and design and worked for the famous fashion house Yves Saint Laurent in Paris, France.

An extremely accomplished fibre artist, her theatrical garments are both stand-alone sculpture and wearable art. All of her pieces are characterized by her trademark high quality craftsmanship and innovative design. She often uses heirloom and recycled fabrics, creating art pieces that are a delight to wear.

Angelika has been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions, and has also been the recipient of various awards for her work, including the BC Creative Achievement Award in 2008, and was named Nelson’s Cultural Ambassador in 2010.

Not satisfied with simply creating textiles, she has also written a number of books on the subject, the most recent published in 2013. In addition to leading textile workshops, she has been an instructor in the Fibre Department at the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson, BC since 1995.

Angelika says of her Tent Dress series, one of which with the words of a 16th Century love poem hand-embroidered around the hem, “The tent dresses are big enough that you could sleep under them. […] It’s a love poem, and I imagine these two under the tent.” quoted in Specialty Fabrics Review, August 2009.
