“Rare Earth and Common Ground”

Gordon Hutchens

I will be exploring this on both a metaphorical and a literal level.  Common ground can be that knowledge and experience that we all share, and it can be that actual ground that we all stand on as we step out our door.  I’ll express this in woodfired pieces with surfaces containing local clay and ash from the trees around us.  Rare earth can imply the unusual, the exotic and the uncommon.  I will also explore this literally by using some of the “Rare Earth” elements, the Lanthanide series on the periodic table:  Lanthanum, Cerium, Neodymium, Praseodymium and Erbium.  These glazes may be combined with silver, bismuth and gold.
