“NEW WORK”

An exhibition featuring

Brian Hoyano & Ann Uusoja

Brian Hoyano Statement
"My Jewellery is influenced by the candour of ancient folk art, the subtlety of Asian design as well as by the machined pristineness of contemporary industrial design.  Add a slightly off-centred perspective.  The May show will include work from 'Pond Series.'"

Bio
Brian Hoyano was born in Montreal. In 1975, he graduated from McGill University with a B.A. in psychology. He worked as a  flat glass artist until 1987, when he became a full time jeweller. He writes, "I am essentially self-taught, with beginner's inspiration and tutorial assistance from Ellen Fraser of Perth, Ontario." Hoyano's glass is included in Contemporary Stained Glass by Joel Russ and Lou Lynn (Doubleday, 1985).

Ann Uusoja Statement
"15 years ago, I discovered silk painting. When I put that first line of dye on that white fabric it resonated, and I knew this was something I could explore in depth. Silk has a lustre to it and takes such an intensity of colour. Combine this with design elements and the possibilities are limitless. This show is about pushing my existing limits in this medium."

Bio
Ann Uusoja graduated from McMaster University in Ontario with a Fine Arts Studio and Art History Degree. After a period of world travel she moved to Vancouver and further studies in Art Education led to work as a Child Life Specialist at BC's Children's Hospital. Here she focussed on the therapy of art for hospitalized children, drawing on what became an important role in her imagery — the power of symbols.
